5 reasons you should be listening to JJ Grey & Mofro

Georgia Warhorse

JJ Grey & Mofro is a blend of Blues, Soul and Funk brewed in the swamps of Florida. My list is heavy on the 2007 album Country Ghetto and for good reason. The album is packed with quality tracks and with it being the oldest, the one I've been able to spend the most time with. I've only recently been able to listen to the newer albums, and they're turning out to be just as impressive.

Supercharged Google Krumb…err Chrome!

After many failed browser relationships, I've settled on Google Chrome, for now. Why? Well, for starters it's fast, but the main reason is its sync feature. When Xmarks called off their service I needed to find something to get my bookmarks synced across multiple computers, since I'm on at least 3 different ones a day. I'd be a millionaire if I had a dollar for every time I bookmarked a great website and then realize that the link is saved on another computer. Here's how to set it up.

Another amazing and growing feature in Chrome are the extensions. Yeah, I know Firefox started this with their Add-Ins, but Google cleaned that mess up. If you're not in Chrome, these links may not work for you (loser). Here are some of my favorites:
PriceBlink - flashes the lowest known price for any retail item you're searching on the Internet. I've already saved over $100 with thing.

GMail Notifier - Yeah, I use Google for email too. This extension provides a popup alert when new email is received or shows the most recent email received to your GMail account when the browser is opened.

IE Tab - unfortunately Google hasn't yet found a way to escape the legacy power of Microsoft and their hideous Internet Explorer. Many websites still are not designed with anything else in mind other than IE. This tab lets you view those pages inside of Chrome.

More Chrome Extensions.

"You used to ask a smart person a question. Now, who do you ask? It starts with g-o, and it's not God" - Steve Wozniak

Face it. Sooner or later, Google will own you, but, if they don't, they will know everything about you.

With Infinite Arms, Band of Horses Ride On

Infinite Arms, released today, is Band of Horses third album, but first with the additions of Tyler Ramsey (guitar, vocals) and Ryan Monroe (keyboards, vocals). It features carefully crafted harmony and while maintaining the Band's unique combination of raw reverb and folk influence.

The Band's new polished sound shines in Factory, a song of longing for the past and fearing the future, "It's temporary, this place I'm in. I permanently won't do, this again". This depth is immediately complimented with signature whimsy, "An hour later, I was thinking it over by the snack machine. I thought about you in a candy bar." This balance of contemplation and abstraction is also evident in Dilly, Northwest Apartment and Laredo, all very song talks of missing someone with high tempo and nice guitar riff.

Compliments is definitely a favorite already. Vibrant guitar with a strong beat and great contemplative lyrics. "If there's a God up in the air, someone lookin' over everyone, at least you've got something to fall back on. And what are people really for? Does anybody even care? I bet you get a lot of compliments down there."

The band's newest members show their influence while evolving the band's sound to a new level. Perfected through performances at BoH's live shows, Older, a mid-tempo country number featuring keyboardist Ryan Monroe on vocals, captures the band's southern sensibilities. Bartles + James is a mellow and harmonic ode that reminds of Fleet Foxes and Phil Ek, who also produced Infinite Arms. The beautifully sentimental Evening Kitchen and Blue Beard have a lot of Tyler Ramsey's influence and remind me of his solo album, A Long Dream About Swimming Across the Sea.

On My Way Back Home is almost a folk/rock version of the Beach Boys' classic "Sloop John B.". A great song about getting back to where you want to be, "I came in this way. And here now I'll stay, if the unknown have to wait one more day".

Infinite Arms satisfies on many levels and offers something for fans of several different genres while bringing the Horses old and new influences along at every turn.

4 out of 5 krumbs will love this one!

Come May 18th, it’s time to posse up

Available May 18th

At this point I find I have less and less time and money for video games, which mostly isn't such a terrible thing. The best part about it is I tend to be very selective about which games I invest those two commodities into which has led me to some of the best games available. Right now there's one game on the horizon that has me salivating.  Red Dead Redemption is an action adventure game set in the old West with an open world format. I had been excited for this game for awhile, knowing that being made by Rockstar, I would get my money's worth out of it.  The most recent promo video however just really pushed me over the edge.  Rockstar's most recent attempt at a online multiplayer in an open world setting (Grand Theft Auto 4) was a bit of a mess and lacked any real direction, by the looks of this video though, they've found their solution...

Shutter Island

Martin Scorcese's latest film starring Leonardo DiCaprio is set in the 1950's on an island near New England that's been turned into a mental institute. Just like Boston, there are criminally insane, violent schizophrenics and various other types of crazies in just about every nook and cranny. How 'bout them apples? The film's setting, premise and cast are good and pull you in. Ben Kingsley is always a haunting figure on screen and in his role as Dr. Cawley, the facility's director, his creepiness works well. Everyone is a suspect through this winding tale of Teddy Daniels' (DiCaprio) quest to discover what's going on. The movie's dramatic twists are reminiscent of Shawshank Redemption meets Memento - both really great movies, I know, but even though I highly recommend seeing Shutter Island, don't worry about hurrying to the theater. You can wait for the DVD.
